The Cathedral Vestry Board Museum - abcFirenze.com

Location and History

Was founded in 1891. The museum holds many sculptures that have been taken from the niches and doors of the Duomo and the Baptistery in order to protect them from the elements. The collection is thus the best guide to the various changes in Florentine official sculpture over the centuries.

Description

The vast majority of sculptures preserved in the Museum are those that Arnolfo had chosen for the facade. In addition to this basic group of Arnolfo works, the Museum exhibits also works of the fourteenth century sculptures removed from the bell tower by Andrea Pisano (c. 1290-c. 1349) and pupils, together with those from the Porta della Mandorla located on the right side of the Duomo. Like the sculptures of Nanni di Banco (1380-1421) and Donatello (1386-1466) originally made for the bell tower and the Duomo, the two large "cantorie" by Luca della Robbia (1400-1482) and Donatello removed from the cathedral`s interior.
